In Surge of Power, young Gavin (Vincent J. Roth) is a corporate attorney and a comic book nerd. One day while visiting the company lab to get some paperwork signed, an evil mad scientist breaks in and causes an accident giving Gavin superpowers. With the aid of a not-so-mad scientist (Robert Hurt), Gavin sets out to become Big City’s latest superhero: Surge. Surge takes on the evil Metal Master to save Big City not to mention a certain Young Man (Joey Bourgeois) who always seems in need of rescue.
The movie is full of comic book and science fiction references to keep most of us sci-fi geeks happy. Noel Niell, Lois Lane from The Adventures of Superman (1950’s TV show) appears as the Young Man’s Aunt Lois, scolding him for always getting into trouble. We also get Nichelle Nichols (Star Trek’s Lt. Uhura) as a semi-retired superhero who helps Surge get his bearings. And Lou Ferrigno (The Incredible Hulk) in a cameo appearance.
The gay content is left “ambiguous”, like certain superhero relationships, but you don’t have to look very hard.
